Both Documents I and II are undated, but the latter is described in newspaper headnotes as being presented with the Mammoth Cheese on 1 Jan. It was more talked about and more written up in the newspapers than any other single exhibit at the Fair. Box cars were loaded with cheese for display and for the competitions. At least three factories provided the raw ingredients to produce a wheel that was approximately three feet thick, seven feet in diameter, and boasted a circumference of 21 feet. The author paints such a realistic picture: Struggles are hard and probably never ending. Say what I will about the somewhat long and meandering narrative, Sheri Holman, at the very least, never bores me! Carnes, eds. There were crowds at every station on the way to Windsor.

As in The Dress Lodger, Holman's most obvious weakness is the jarring tonal clashes that result when her plot threads finally collide. A gifted writer, Sheri Holman has written a deft novel about duty and rebellion and the ways we seek to mend the wounds of history. It dried up without mould or decay but has lost all the characteristics of Cheddar cheese. There are many pleasures in this book: its vivid characters, delineations of cheese and cheesemaking, and its evocation of the South. But -- history.
